Brendan Cole - Live and Unjudged Thursday 10th June 2010 £24.50 - £29.50 Brendan Cole, one of the professional dancers in BBC TV’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, performed his first tour of the UK 'Live and Unjudged' last winter. It was a huge success, selling out almost every show and receiving glowing reviews, so due to public demand, 'Live and Unjudged' will be touring again this summer. The show sees Brendan - the ‘bad boy of ballroom’ - demonstrate his brilliant execution and superb choreography in a dynamic dance show. From the sensual moves of the tango, rumba and cha cha, the elegance of the foxtrot, quickstep and Viennese waltz, to a red hot blast of paso doble, salsa and jive, Brendan and his guests perform their choice of everybody’s favourites, up close and personal. An exhilarating display of dances are set to songs from some of the greatest musical legends such as: Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Michael Bublé, and Michael Jackson, mixed with music as contrasting as Carmina Burana and Prince, ensuring that this show is full-on dance-floor dynamite. Joining Brendan will be a galaxy of championship dancers: his brother Scott Cole (three-times New Zealand champion), Latin American professionals Andrew Cuerden and Hanna Haarala (‘Strictly Come Dancing’ series 3), Izabela Hannah (series 3) and Nicole Cutler, former Strictly professional and World Latin American Champion. The singers and band are under the direction of Musical Director Barry Robinson, popular MD for numerous West End shows. Blood Wedding
By Federico Garcia Lorca In translation by Carmen Zapata and Michael Dewell
When a bride runs away with a former lover on the very day of her wedding, it leads to an inevitable double tragedy. Set to original music, this production brings Lorca's passionate and intensely lyrical drama to life, a tale of honour, grief and rebellion against the suffocating constraints of a harsh rural Andalusian existence.
This translation of Lorca’s famous Bodas de Sangre is a must for all students of Spanish, whether at A-Level, IB, or at university. From directors Brittany Ashworth, (one of Oxford’s rising actresses, last seen in Michaelmas term’s Barnaby Rudge at the Keble O’Reilly theatre) and Ellen Jones, (producer-director of Ayckbourn’s Confusions and producer of successful new-writing venture The Local last year), such a highly colourful and dynamic production with the strongest of student casts is guaranteed to entertain.
Tickets are priced at £9, or £7 for concessions. They can be purchased from both the New Theatre and OFS Studio box offices on George Street, by ringing 0844 844 0662 or by visiting our website at www.OFSstudio.org.uk (internet bookings are subject to a transaction fee). For school bookings and bookings for groups of 10+ or more, please ring our dedicated team on 0844 372 7272. SHALAMAR ANNOUNCE APRIL SHOW DATES WITH SPECIAL GUESTS KENNY THOMAS AND STEVE BROOKSTEIN Standby for ‘a night to remember’ as 70’s and 80’s supergroup Shalamar return to the UK. Don’t miss Howard Hewett, Jeffery Daniel and Carolyn Griffey performing all their Disco hits: A Night to Remember, I Can Make You Feel Good, The Second Time Around, There It Is, Take That To The Bank, and many more. Shalamar will be supported by two special guests: British soul star Kenny Thomas and X-Factor winner Steve Brookstein. Shalamar were originally created by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey and masterminded by Soul Train producer Don Cornelius. Regarded as fashion icons and trendsetters they helped to introduce 'body-popping' to the UK, where the group had a string of hits with songs such as Take That To The Bank (1978), I Owe You One (1980) and 1982's I Can Make You Feel Good, A Night to Remember, There It Is and Friends. The album of the same title, Friends, was also a big seller in the UK, crossing the genres of pop, disco and soul. The band's record sales in the UK increased dramatically when Jeffery Daniel demonstrated his body-popping dancing on Top of the Pops, premiering the Moonwalk on television for the first time. Michael Jackson (who was a fan of the group) took his then 12 year old sister Janet to see Shalamar perform at Disneyland and Daniel later went on to teach Michael the Moonwalk and choreographed his Bad and Smooth Criminal videos. Shalamar reformed in 2005, for the UK television series Hit Me Baby, One More Time with original members Jeffrey Daniel, Howard Hewett, and new singer Carolyn Griffey (daughter of Shalamar founder and Solar Record boss Dick Griffey). They reached the grand final on 22 May 2005, ultimately losing out to Shakin’ Stevens. Music fashions may ebb and flow, but great voices never go out of style. Double Platinum seller Kenny Thomas, one of the best vocalists ever heard in British soul, made a huge impact with two Top 10 albums, 1991’s Voices and the 1993 sequel Wait For Me. In addition there was the Top 10 smash Thinking about your Love, three Top 20 singles – Outstanding, Best of You and Trippin on your Love - and four further Top 40 UK singles. The album Voices went double platinum and led to Brit Award Nominations as Best British Male Vocalist and Best British Newcomer. Steve Brookstein first came to the public's attention in 2004 as the first ever winner of The X Factor. Following this spectacular success, Steve went straight to the top spot with his debut single Against All Odds and in June 2005 his debut album also hit the number one spot. In 2008, Steve joined the company of Our House, an Olivier Award winning musical. The show toured the UK for much of 2008 and received fantastic reviews and standing ovations every night. Most recently Steve has written and recorded an album with his wife Eileen Hunter, an accomplished jazz singer. Shalamar, along with special guests Kenny Thomas and Steve Brookstein, come to the New Theatre Oxford on Sunday 18th April 2010. Tickets are on sale now priced at £27.50 and £30.50. They can be purchased from the New Theatre box office on George Street, by ringing 0844 847 1585 or by visiting our website at www.newtheatre oxford.org.uk (phone and internet bookings subject to booking/transaction fees). Ray Davies: 12th May 2010 £33.50 - £36.50 Ray Davies, one of the most successful and influential songwriters to emerge from the British Invasion of the 1960s and founder of The Kinks, whose hits include ‘You Really Got Me’, ‘All Day and All of The Night’, ‘Tired of Waiting’, ‘Set Me Free’, ‘Lola’, ‘Sunny Afternoon’, ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’, and ‘Apeman’, comes to the New Theatre this May. Jools Holland with special guest Alison Moyet: 12th November 2010 £33.50 Jools Holland will tour the length and breadth of the UK throughout 2010 with his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and will be joined for the very first time by one of the UK’s most enduring and acclaimed vocalists, performers and songwriters, the extraordinary Alison Moyet. Renowned for bringing the ultimate party experience to stages around the country, the 2010 Autumn tour will play the New Theatre on Friday 12th November and is definitely not to be missed. THE SOUND OF MUSIC I am also delighted to announce THE SOUND OF MUSIC, starring Connie Fisher, as this year's Christmas show.
