The Samsung R510 has a 15.4in screen, which makes it perfect for those users who find the smaller laptops available on the market irritating to use, especially when you have serious work to do. However the real test of any device on the market is how well it performs in meeting four basic criteria: 1. Is it easy to use? 2. Is it reliable? 3. Is it easy to operate? 4. Is the price right? Is it easy to use?At 2.7kg, it’s designed for those who occasionally need to carry it outside the office, or do not have the manual dexterity and perfect eyesight of a teenager. Though, it is for its range of functions it is lighter than many of its similar sized rivals currently available on the market today. However, despite not having the portability of its smaller rivals, it makes up with its superb cool piano black finish, robust design, superb functionality, style and value for money. Any user would be proud to be an owner of such a device. Is it easy to operate? Its robust and pleasing design means that it’s reassuringly sturdy to handle and makes typing, on its ergonomically designed keyboard, feasible. Users with large hands will find its full-sized keyboard has a light, responsive action. In addition, many users will appreciate Samsung designers for considering health and safety concerns of users by providing silver-nano bacterial protection to the keyboard’s surface, which certainly gives a pleasant feel as one types. There is equally little to complain about the Samsung R510's track pad when it comes control of its mouse cursor. It's accurate, with unmarked vertical and horizontal scroll zones along its edges and each of the two buttons respond with a light, delicate click. Like many laptops today it has a 1.3 Mega pixel built-in camera with microphone and speakers which make it possible to conduct internet video conferencing. When watching DVDs the contrast is good and the sound quality fine. As for its abilities to cope with the notorious memory hungry Vista Home Premium, Samsung has provided more than enough capacity to meet the demands of such a operating system with 3GB of RAM and generous 320GB hard disk space Samsung has sufficient USB, VGA and HDMI ports to allow you to connect to your memory sticks, modem broadband stick or even high definition television to the Samsung R510. Also the R510 includes a built-in wireless LAN feature, which allows you to gain access to the internet in numerous public locations fitted with wireless networks. For the computer game players amongst you, this machine is not designed for serious computer gaming with the latest memory hungry games. Is it reliable?Battery life is useful however, with the Samsung R510 managing just over four and a half hours at idle and over three hours when word processing. Today this is less of a concern when many trains, planes and long distance buses allow you to plug in your notebook as you travel. Samsung has a long regarded reputation for producing high quality, well designed and reliable products, and the new Samsung R510 appear to be following in this long tradition. So far none of my Samsung products that I own has proven unreliable. Is the price right? While it’s unlikely to grab any headlines, Samsung's R510 still offers fine value for money. Would I recommend it?For those seeking a budget priced basic machine for serious word processing or editing photos or videos, it is a bargain. Possible ImprovementsIt would be nice if users could have a choice of colour schemes for its covers, so that it is easier to identify your notebook from others. Extra capacity to play some of the more modern computer games, would be useful. Marks 4/5 For more information
