TOP TAILOR TOUTS TRADE IN TOURIST TOWN

By Nicholas Newman Editor

10 May 2006

A top Oxford hotel is not usually the place you would expect to find Hong Kong’s top tailor. Mr.Raja Daswani of Raja Fashions promises to make made to measure business suits by taking the customer’s measurements here in the UK and having them made up back in Hong and then fitted here.

Having seen his full page advertisement for his service in a national newspaper, promoting handmade suits starting at £200, a quarter of the price you would pay at Savile Row. I made an appointment to see him at his hotel suite in Oxford’s Old Bank Hotel, when he visited Oxford.

On the day appointed, I was shown into his room overlooking Oxford’s High Street with views of Queen’s College. I found Mr. Raja surrounded by a very large selection of different types of suiting materials including flannel, wool and even tweed of various weights, designs, colours and patterns.

Having selected a grey worsted material I favoured I was then closely questioned regarding the type of suit I had in mind – this covered such items as double or single breasted, type of pockets, pleats in my trousers and the degree of close fitting I desired – it was an intense interrogation.

Having survived this thorough cross-examination, I was put through a detailed measuring process followed by being photographed from a number of angles. Mr. Raja explained that these digital photographs were important in guiding the tailor in ….an overall concept of the styling most suitable for my general physique and posture.

We discussed the money and because I had chosen a heavier weight of material the price was higher than the impression given in the newspaper advert. Shaken but I understand that superior materials were more costly.

The master tailor explained that a completed design would be delivered to my home in about four weeks. Most important of all he explained that if any alterations or adjustments are required. I should attend him on his next visit to the UK next month. Such a fitting service would include the rare possibility of a completely new suit being made.

In general Mr. Raja’s service seems to be a very good way to get a made to measure suit, which would cost a lot more from a bespoke tailor in Savile Row, London. After the professional care taken with me - I await in anticipation for my suit to be delivered by post next month. WATCH THIS SPACE!

And in Part Two - Next Month - We see how things turn out.
