A
Shattered Peace
Versailles 1919 and the Price We Pay Today
A talk by the
author David Andelman
Taking as a point of
departure the Treaty of Versailles, David Andelman,
executive editor or Forbes.com, offers a compelling new
perspective on the origin of many of today's most critical
international issues. He turns the spotlight on the many
errors committed by World War I peacemakers that ultimately
led to crises from Iraq to Kosovo and wars from the Middle
East to Vietnam. He will also discuss the small nations and
minor players at Versailles, including figures such as Ho
Chi Minh and Charles de Gaulle, who would later become
boldfaced names. With a cautionary message for us today, he
shows how world leaders dismissed repeated warnings from
their experts and laid the groundwork for a host of
catastrophic events.
David A. Andelman (New
York, NY) is Executive Editor of Forbes.com and a senior
member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a former
foreign correspondent for the New York Times and CBS News in
Europe and Asia. He has also served as Washington
correspondent for CNBC, senior editor of Bloomberg News, and
business editor of the New York Daily News.
The
Neuroscience of Creativity
A Lecture
by Baroness Susan Greenfield
Baroness Susan
Greenfield’s lecture explores neurological and psychiatric
scenarios where individuals are more creative than the
norm. Could there be common features in these diverse cases
that could give a clue to the creative and even the “aha”
moment of creative insight itself?
Baroness Susan Greenfield
is a professor at Oxford who studies the physiology of the
brain. She is also Director of the Royal Institution.

The Logic
of Life
Uncovering the New Economics of Everything
A talk by the
author Tim Harford
Tim Harford’s eye-opening
and accessible, The Logic of Life sets out to prove
that nearly everything in life – even when we least suspect
it – has its basis in rational decision-making. By weaving
together engaging stories, Tim Harford will convince you
that life is surprisingly logical: everything from the most
intimate decisions – to have sex, to take drugs, to lead an
honest life – to the logic of neighbourhoods, large
corporations, cities themselves, and even history. This is
the economics of everything you never thought was economics,
and will show you the world in a new way.
Tim Harford is the author
of the Sunday Times Bestseller The Undercover
Economist. He is a member of the Financial Times
editorial board and writes a regular column for the FT
magazine.
