Studying at Oxford

A few facts about studying at Oxford, from a local who lives in the original Oxford, in England, Europe.

Most students who have studied at an Oxford educational establishment will say they are studied at ‘Oxford’, even if it is for a short summer course or a long three to four year Doctorate.

In American terms both the University of Oxford http://www. oxford.ac.uk/  and Oxford Brookes University http://www. brookes.ac.uk/  are state run universities.

Oxford Brookes University is just one of Oxford's universities, though less than fifty years old, while the University of Oxford is nearly seven hundred years old.

They are both taxpayer funded organisations, though the University of Oxford is the richer. As to which is better, it depends on the course being taken, also they do not offer exactly the same courses.

As for 'studying at Oxford', most students will mean just that, they will not differentiate between the two universities. Those who do not know that there are two universities at Oxford will assume it is the older University of Oxford and not ask for further details.

As to which is better, it depends on which course see Good University Guide 2009 http://extras. timesonline. co.uk/tol _gug/good universit yguide.php

The only private university in Britain, in the American sense is the University of Buckingham http://www. buckingh am.ac.uk  some 30 miles away from Oxford.

Any one coming to Oxford to study, who is not from the EU, has to pay the full amount in fees, which helps subsidise the education of British and other EU students.
