HS2 THE BATTLE BEGINS
" Nicholas Newman"
By: Nicholas Newman
Strangely, the government’s proposals to construct High Speed Two has
been met by a storm of opposition, largely by a group of people who fear for their way of life will be
threatened.
Yet, the long-term advantages of such a proposal are self-evident. The line will greatly improve capacity on the
road and rail networks that link London with Birmingham and at a local level divert much long distance traffic away
from existing transport networks. It will, inter alia, enable local rail and bus operators to improve the quality
of services and reduce traffic congestion for local business.
It will also facilitate the government’s economic and environmental ambitions for the surrounding area. Of course,
in the short term, opposition is understandable, yet it overlooks the long term, prosperity that will arise from
the increase in housing values and easier access to neighbouring areas and regions?
